Punica granatum - Pomegranate

Height: 0,4–0,6 m

Pomegranate is a densely branched deciduous shrub that grows to 2-4m in height and up to 2.5m in width. It is planted in our Mediterranean-style gardens for its brightly colored flowers and tasty fruit. Its funnel-shaped coral-red flowers bloom from June, and the apple-shaped fruit contains a multitude of juicy seeds beneath a thick, leathery rind. It is very decorative at flowering time, when it is covered in red-orange blossoms. It likes a sunny, warm spot and well-drained soil rich in nutrients. Water needs are moderate. Pomegranate has been used since ancient times to preserve health, thanks to its antioxidant content; it also contains minerals such as magnesium, potassium and calcium, and vitamins C and K. The Egyptians revered it as a symbol of eternal life, and the ancient Greeks as the fruit of love. It is planted as a specimen plant in gardens, for its beautiful appearance during flowering and its tasty fruit.
